I welcomed the Sabbath today in front of my piano recalling hymns and singing as I would if I were in church.
I just had a four-day comprehensive exam this week and a new chapter of my life begins next week. I’m full of worries. And the future is all a blur. Nothing is certain except that I need to trust His plans each passing moment.
While randomly browsing on my digital hymnal, I came across this old personal favorite “All the Way”. I’ve known the song since I was a kid. We sing it at church every Sabbath and even during our nightly family worship at home. I play it on the piano every Midweek when I was in highschool and it has become my theme from college til now.
The beauty about hymns is that we can never exhaust its meaning. Every time we sing it, new truths just come flowing in with its sweet comforting melodies.
Coincidentally, I bought a book a week ago about a hymn writer named Fanny Crosby. I have heard her story when my father spoke it at church. She’s fond of writing hymns. Until she lost her eyesight due to an infection secondary to an incompetent doctor’s negligence. But even after that, she continued writing music for the Lord until her last breath.
A friend of mine commented, “She still saw Jesus despite…Yet many who have good eyesight fail to see Him.”
F. Crosby wrote approximately 9000 hymns. And majority of the hymns we most love was written based on her personal encounters with God. One of which is this hymn All the Way.
All the way my Savior leads me
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His faithful mercies?
Who through life has been my guide
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort
Ere by faith in Him to dwell
For I know whate’er fall me
Jesus doeth all things well
All of the way my Savior leads me
And He cheers each winding path I tread
Gives me strength for every trial
And He feeds me with the living bread
And though my weary steps may falter
And my soul a-thirst may be
Gushing from a rock before me
Though a spirit joy I see
And all the way my Savior leads me
Oh, the fullness of His love
Perfect rest in me is promised
In my Father’s house above
When my spirit clothed immortal
Wings it’s flight through the realms of the day
This my song through endless ages
Jesus led me all the way
I was comforted tonight knowing that Jesus leads me not just today but all the way! The future is indeed frightening. Everything that is happening in the world today only causes us to worry. But now is not the time to doubt Him who throughout our entire lives has been our guide.
I would like to add the Tagalog translated version of this song from the SDA Church Hymnal because my home church used to sing in the vernacular. The words just hit differently.
This will be my song through endless ages — JESUS LED ME ALL THE WAY!
